The SJ Ultra Vest 2.0 was the best-selling vest in the world and Scott Jurek's new FKT Vest is even better.
I just received my FKT vest in the mail. I was immediately, upon wearing it, disappointed.
Maybe on the long run it will work out. However, compared to my last Ultimate Direction vest I don't see how this one can match up. If my old vest I placed my plus size iPhone in one of the water bottle pockets. In the FKT vest, the phone pocket is too small. The water bottle pocket is less then ideal because of it's odd shape. The phone would bounce around. I don't know where a plus size phone can fit.
In addition, the side pockets at the base of the vest are not very user friendly. I might be able to stuff things into them but I can not readily access materials while on a run as I can with my other vest. Use of the pockets require that I cease running while using. Phillip on Dec 18th 2017
I went from a Nathan pack to this and the FKT vest is by far superior and fits like a glove over the Nathan pack. Pockets are very easy to get to and the bottles are perfect placment and ease of getting in and out of the vest. Cant wait to hike and run many miles with this on. Adam Endsley on Sep 26th 2017
Wish the front upper pocket was bigger for a point n shoot just a bit to small
Plenty of pack space in back Lincoln Weis on Sep 6th 2017
I am a larger guy (5' 10" & 205 lbs) so I was afraid it might be too small for me (like another brand that I tried which ended up being more like a straight jacket). The Jurek FKT size LG was a great fit however. I like that the front bottles are lower than most vests - it just is more appealing to me and fits my body better. I did run once with just a 1.5L bladder installed and no front bottles which caused the vest to droop in back and the top chest strap to ride uncomfortably up on my neck. Perhaps it was just that I didn't have everything adjusted right, but if I'm not in need of too much fluid, I'll run with just the bottles in front from now on. The FlexForm Bottle's valve is very hard to open at first, but got easier with use. Art J on Aug 15th 2017
This is my first UD and I am very happy with it. Things I noticed include it fits very comfortably, has easily accessible pockets, is relatively light weight and is easy to adjust. I have had vests in the past that were so complicated to adjust with hidden straps and buckles I found myself wishing they had included instructions. I'd recommend this vest. Been using Salomon Advanced Skin 5 & 12 for years and it was time for a new vest and I have never worn an UD vest - I am always skeptical of the adjustable side straps on vests but I decided to go for this product and I was immediately impressed. I took it immediately on some long runs and "out-of-the-box" this pack worked - truly am enjoying all the gear I can carry and how easy it is to access the items. This baby has moved to the #1 position on long runs for me. Sam P on Jul 19th 2017
I wore a UD Anton K. vest for 3 years and the thing rocked. I am a dedicated UD user and fan! I ordered a new Jurek FKT vest and the lower elastic buckle fastener broke on my first time trying the vest on. Still sitting on my shelf and haven't run with it once! Andy Paul on Jul 12th 2017
My wife and I really like this vest. I've been using my own home made and modified packs for years due to tight budget. I finally invested in something nice and it has been well worth it. All of the front and side pockets are easy to access with a single hand, which has more than enough storage for a full on day in the mountains. Or enough for two people on less demanding days. The main compartment has plenty of room for layers and emergency supplies. I was able to comfortably attach a helmet and ice ax as well. I trimmed the shaft of my ice ax down a bit so that it doesn't stick up over my head while I have it stowed on the loop and clipped with the bungees.
My only complaint would be the plastic inserts under the bottle sleeves, which I have made a small incision and removed through the inside of the sleeve. After 50 miles these can begin to cause a fair amount of irritation, especially if you are not quite "flat" chested. Kyle Pease on Jun 21st 2017
First off let me say that I really like this pack. I'll go through the pros and cons of what I've experienced in the first few weeks of use. I ordered this one (which I never tried on at a store first because I couldn't find one) because the SJ 3.0 pack just didn't have any extra storage if you use a hydration bladder (which I do) and the AK pack was just too bulky for what I wanted. This seemed like a perfect combo of size, weight, and storage capacity.
- VERY light weight
- Fairly breathable
- Good amount of storage for size
- Nice hose routing options. For a pack that doesn't come with a rear hydration bladder, this is really set up to add one.
- Nice "extras" like the whistle, salt cap pocket, little pockets on the front straps.
- Not enough smaller pockets on rear of pack to separate supplies. Not sure why they didn't leave the popular bottom side-opening pocket found on the other SJ vests.
- The strong, breathable, and light weight mesh is not the softest if you're wearing this pack over a tank top or shirtless.
- The front bottles are nice but very cumbersome.
- The small padded inserts on the base of the front bottle pockets are unnecessary and a little bulky when you don't use those bottles.
Overall I really like the pack. Best thing I can say about it is I've hardly noticed wearing it and there was no transition period to get used to the feel of it. Billy C on Jun 8th 2017
I just purchased the Jurek FKT vest to do my first 88K ultra race put on by the endurance society ,it was comfortable and carried plenty of water and other items I needed for a long trail race , it fit great with no bouncing or rubbing ,I would highly recommend this vest to anybody wanting to do any type of endurance race or training Unknown on Jun 1st 2017
Really like the pocket placement and the front bottle holders. My dilemma was size. My 29 inch rib cage should have fit the small 24 - 33 inch size. It was snug, no extra room for a heavy shirt or jacket. The medium 30 - 40 inch was too large. I could tighten it enough with internal straps in the side pockets but the pockets were bunched up and would have caused chaffing as my arms rubbed the loose side pockets. My solutions was to sew two darts along the bottom edge in the center of the back. The darts took up 3 & 1/4 inches. There is now room for a jacket. With a tank shirt, I tighten the internal straps about 1 inch and then the pack is a perfect fit. LalaGC on May 31st 2017
I love this pack. Its my first Hydration pack so to be honest I can't compare it to anything else... but it fits me just perfect. No bouncing around, and the new bottles fit nice and tight to your chest. I love the pockets all over the place. In my limited use with it so far, it has all the space I think I'd need. Two comments though.
1)The cell phone pocket is too small for anything other bigger than an iPhone 4/5.
2)The new Flexform bottles fit great in the vest, but the bottles are more difficult to drink from than the Kicker valve bottle tops - I'm hoping I just need to get used to them.
I would recommend this product to others! Paul B on Apr 18th 2017
I liked the soft flasks that came with the 3.0. But overall the fit of the 3rd generation vests just didn't work for me. Back of the neck was too high and the shoulders were too roomy.
Ive only got 40 miles on this vest so far, but I'm so glad they came out with it. It keeps the structure of the 2.0, but with vast improvements. The flat bottles are incredibly comfortable. The added up front storage is perfect for a pair of shades or big items and they really cleaned up the confusing zipper access in the back portion.
My favourite thing about this vest is how the flasks now sit low at the front bottom portion of the vest, rather than half way up your chest. This somehow makes sloshing virtually unoticable and keeps things even closer to your body so it's not bouncing and shifting when your really tearing up a trail.
Great work! Unknown on Mar 22nd 2017
New to distance running but have been wearing the vest on all my runs and find it extremely comfortable. Phone pocket barely fits my droid turbo 2 but it fits. Only complaint if there is one is that it had a key hook somewhere. I see this complaint for many vests from many manufacturers and never understood not adding one.
Overall happy with the vest, excited to try it for my first ultra. Clint on Mar 13th 2017
Received my new Scott Jurek FKT vest late last week. I was able to take it for a test run on Saturday - 21 miles of trails! The vest fits me perfectly. I purchased a large and all I can say is well done Ultimate Direction! My previous vest was an original PB Adventure vest. I can honestly say that vest never came close to fitting me as pefectly as this new FKT vest does. I must say that also really like the new bottles! So far, so good. I am very pleased with my purchase. Unknown on Mar 6th 2017
A very comfortable vest. This was my first vest and was looking for something for the 8 plus mile runs. There are lots of available adjustments on the vest to fit you perfectly. I was also happy that the front pocket was able to fit my S5 with no problem. I have to admit that my first pack I purchased had a broken strap and a bottle leaked. But the customer service with Ultimate Direction was above and beyond. They took care of the problem right away. Customer for life. #goodjobrunnerclub Daniel N. on Jan 16th 2017
Scott and UD nailed it with this vest! I love the new bottle shape. Easy to hold, comfortable fit in the vest, these bottles are a great update to the Jurek collection.
The vest dials in to comfort with ease. I can carry a 70oz bladder in the back, if needed, and still have ample storage for a jacket, nutrition, and other necessities.
In one run this has become my go-to vest! It's exactly what I was looking for. Joey on Nov 22nd 2016
